Chris Paul Fined for Criticizing Female Referee - Assignment #1

I chose a story from one of my favorite websites to search and read upon on ESPN.Com. I love this website cause obviously my love for sports, but just how in depth the writers are in there stories. They usually hit an array of different media outlets as well when posting a story on this website. This story hits video, text, and interactivity as well.

I'm a huge NBA fan, so when i heard Chris Paul had made comments directed at a female official, Lauren Holtkamp, who is a 1st year ref, after a game in which he got a tech & his team, the LA Clippers, lost badly to the Cleveland Cavaliers, I had to check it out. There was a lot of speculation that he was against women referring in the NBA, and it set up a whole discussion about women & if they are treated equally and with respect in male pro sports. He was upset at a technical foul that he received late in the game, and the quote from him that made this a quote on quote "story" was when he told reporter, "That's ridiculous. If that's the case, this might not be for her."

This story works so well because in the article, it has video of what happened, and also Chris Paul's post game response to the tech he got from the female referee in the game. There is also a comments section all the way at the bottom of the article, where other people are discussing there thoughts on the article and what they think Chris Paul meant. They're just so many different options you can go with in the story. From print, video and interacting with others about it.

My thoughts on this story is that in my opinion Chris Paul was not throwing shots at the fact that she's a woman, and because of her gender, isn't equipped to be a NBA referee. He was just frustrated over the call, that he thought was unnecessary and shouldn't have been called. He was thinking in terms of just basketball & that's it. However his quotes in the post game had people thinking differently and because of that, he was fined $25,000 by the league.

To conclude, i love going on ESPN.Com, def one of my favorite sites to check out, especially cause i have a huge passion for sports. It's very descriptive, And it hits on all the elements. You can even social media the story whether it's on Facebook or Twitter. This article is related to basketball fans, players, referees, and most importantly women & how they're treated in levels of pro sports, especially male sports.

  2. Chris Paul should not have said what he said, regardless if he meant it negatively or not. Personally, I think it has been blown way out of proportion.

I believe he said what he said because the NBA is a predominantly male sport, including players, coaches and officials. The NBA basically screams "male sport only," where one could not really fathom a female figure in the NBA in this day in age, and it is unfair that people (like Chris Paul) can forget that women can apply themselves in positions most males do, and in this case, being an NBA official.
Chris Paul thought of Lauren Holtkam as a trainee of some sort, criticizing her performance as if she hasn't earned the right to be there. Again, this is the mindset one can have after repeatedly only seeing male figures in the NBA. Chris Paul came across something different in his game against the Clippers that night, and that was a female referee giving him a technical foul he did not agree with whatsoever. When you take those two things, it leads to comments like this.
